Product Description:
The Steinel HPD3 KNX Presence Detector is a state-of-the-art optical sensor designed to detect, count, and locate individuals in defined zones within a room. With its 120° detection angle and a range of up to 10 metres, it ensures accurate monitoring of occupancy in spaces such as lecture halls, open-plan offices, and conference rooms. The HPD3 also features sensors for temperature, humidity, VOCs, and CO2, making it a comprehensive solution for environmental monitoring and energy-efficient building management.
The detector integrates seamlessly with KNX systems, providing intelligent control over lighting, HVAC, and air quality systems. It supports constant-lighting control and presence-based automation. Additionally, IoT connectivity via REST API, MQTT, and BacNet allows for advanced data integration into smart building platforms. The HPD3 is designed for concealed ceiling installation, making it a discreet yet powerful tool for modern building automation.

IP has superior network layer hardware, software and data throughput (whether wired or wireless) with decades of tech industry development. All the benefits of a multi-vendor ecosystem persist. Protocols like MQTT and end to end encryption enable the IoT promise, zero-trust security, analytics and data-lakes.
IP device availability is growing strongly, albeit off a low base. The ability to mix topologies and bridge between traditional bus architecture like KNX and IP-based POE devices enables a risk mitigated future-proof solution. Being able to take advantage of the traditional richness of the ecosystem of products (BACNet, DALI, KNX), with a future architecture in place, means the speed of the transition is neutralised.
IP should not be viewed as either/or, rather as both/and.
A final consideration is that there are many more IT engineers than building services engineers which means skills will be more readily available in future.
